Public Safety Officer Position

Summary: Under the supervision of the Chief of Public Safety, the Public Safety Officer is responsible for the safety and security of the Airport during their assigned shift. Tasks include, but are not limited to, aircraft rescue and firefighting, emergency medical response, and peace officer functions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Patrols all airport facilities including the airfield, roadways, parking lots, and the terminal building.
  • Performs general peace officer duties on Capital Region Airport Authority properties and affect lawful arrests as applicable.
  • Enforces compliance with Airport Rules and Regulations, Michigan Aeronautics Codes, Federal Aviation Regulations and Michigan State Law.
  • Responds to all emergencies on the airport, in a timely and effective manner, while acting within the scope of training and licensure and meeting the requirements of state and Federal Regulations.
  • Administers emergency medical treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
  • Prepares departmental logs, reports, and records as required.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Associates Degree in police administration, criminal justice, or a related area.


  • Has completed an MCOLES approved basic police academy or Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE) Program and is eligible for certification as a police officer in the State of Michigan.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver's License.


  • Ability to pass an FBI fingerprint-based criminal history background check and a Transportation Security Administration security threat assessment.
  • Must be available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Accordingly, work schedule will vary depending on department requirements, but will include shift work, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in police administration, criminal justice, or a related area.


  • One to three years of law enforcement or firefighting experience.


  • Candidates who possess a State of Michigan Fire Fighter I & II certification and/or a current State of Michigan Medical First Responder license are preferred; however, all non-certificate holding applicants are considered, and training for certifications and licenses will be provided by the department.
  • Certified in Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting


Public Safety Officers are represented under a collective bargaining agreement; current base pay is between $43,867.20 - $56,825.60 with a comprehensive benefit package listed below. Candidates with previous experience may qualify for a higher starting pay rate in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Candidates who complete Michigan Fire Fighter I & II and/or Medical First Responder licensing while employed with the airport authority qualify for a one-time bonus for each certification.
