The City of Ypsilanti is in Washtenaw County and is home to Eastern Michigan University. The city was incorporated as a village in 1832 and later as a city in 1858. The city is diverse, with a rich history and heritage. The incorporated area of the city is 4.3 square miles. The city is chartered under the Council/Manager form of government and is governed by a Mayor and City Council, who appoints a City Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the city. The Mayor and City Council is elected every four years with staggered terms. The City Manager appoints all department heads and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the city. The city has a general fund budget of $17 million and 120 full-time employees.

The City of Ypsilanti is seeking an experienced police chief. The previous chief resigned from the position after 9 years of service. The police department has a budget of $5.4 million, with thirty-seven full-time and one part-time employee. The police department has four divisions; patrol, detective, parking and records and is a full-service department. The city is seeking a visionary leader as Chief of Police who will facilitate a safer, more connected community.
