City of Petoskey: Public Safety Officer Closing Date: July 12, 2023

The City of Petoskey now plans to develop an eligibility list for use in filling vacancies within full-time Public Safety Officer personnel positions. These positions provide special opportunities for persons who are alert, physically fit, and interested in community service employment that carries with it considerable responsibilities. Persons holding certifications in law enforcement, firefighting, and emergency medical techniques, or who have the ability to obtain certifications in all these areas, would be encouraged to apply.

Applicants must:

  1. Be a United States Citizen;
  2. Have a High School Diploma or GED;
  3. Have a valid Michigan Driver's License;
  4. Successfully complete oral, and physical fitness examinations;
  5. Undergo psychological screening and medical examinations, including a drug screen; and
  6. Pass a background investigation.

The following qualifications are preferred but not necessary for application:

  1. Be currently licensed or eligible for licensing under the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards,
  2. Possess Michigan certifications as a Firefighter 1 and 2,
  3. Certification as a Basic Emergency Medical Technician,
  4. Possess a 2-year or 4-year college degree.


  1. $5,000 sign on bonus ($1,500 up front, $1,500 upon successful completion of FTO program, $2,000 upon obtaining licenses in all disciplines of Police, Fire and EMS)
  2. Starting Base Wage $50,482
  3. Base wage after 3 years $77,293
  4. Overtime opportunities
  5. Paid vacation time, Personal Leave (sick time), Floating Holiday
  6. Comp time opportunities (up to 150 hrs. per calendar year)
  7. 2 private workout facilities (ability to gain comp time for working out off duty)
  8. Opportunities to work out on duty
  9. Senior officer pay
  10. Medical, Dental and Vision upon date of hire
  11. MERS Defined Contribution Plan 5% employee contribution with up to 10% employer contribution (15% max).
  12. 50% tuition reimbursement for future education in Public Safety
  13. $350.00 annual equipment allowance
