The Portage Department of Public Safety (PDPS) Lateral Entry Program affords certified, experienced Police Officers the opportunity to join the Portage Department of Public Safety - Police Division. Opportunities for officers who have excelled in their law enforcement careers and are up to the task of meeting the high standards of the PDPS are HERE!

Candidates with prior full-time experience will he hired in at an advance pay step based on prior years of experience, up to Step F.  Step F of the current Portage Police Officer's Association collective bargaining agreement is currently paying $37.20 per hour/$77,371 annually.   Step F will be $38.87 per hour/$80,852 annually (effective July 1, 2023) and $40.63 per hour/$84,491 annually (effective July 1, 2024). Out-of-state officers or those who are separated from a police department for more than a year are subject to re-licensure requirements as define by MCOLES and the Recognition of Prior Training & Education program.

All candidates must be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, possess an associate degree and have no felony convictions, including expunged convictions.  Successful candidates must also obtain a valid Michigan driver license upon hire.  Successful candidates must complete all required tests and evaluations.
