Emmett Township Department of Public Safety: Public Safety Officer Closing Date: November 30, 2023

The Emmett Township Department of Public Safety is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Public Safety Officer. We offer starting pay for Public Safety Officers at $25.03 per hour ($54,665.52 per year, plus overtime). The current top pay of $30.16 per hour is achieved after only four (4) years ($65,869.44, plus overtime). In addition to the competitive pay, we offer a first-class benefits package including Health Insurance, Vision and Dental along with an optional Health Savings Account. Employees also are also granted a longevity bonus by their seniority, 12 annual holidays, compensatory time, monthly sick time, and a Defined Benefit Pension Plan.  Generous vacation time is afforded to each employee starting at 48 hours (after 1st year) and increasing to a max of 200 hours per year.  The patrol division works 12 hours shifts with every other weekend being three days off.

The Charter Township of Emmett is located in south central Michigan, just west of the I-94 / I-69 interchange. The township has a population of 11,706 (2020 Census) and covers an area of approximately 32 square miles.  Emmett Township has multiple large parks for recreation, an entertainment area and is approximately 120 miles west of Detroit and 170 miles east of Chicago. The Emmett Township Department of Public Safety is a developing department always looking for ways to improve service and quality of life through innovative ideas and inventive methods. 

Motivated officers have opportunities for special assignments and promotions such as Detective, Sergeant, K-9, Field Training and specialized Training Officers, School Liaison Officer, Evidence Technicians, Accident Investigation, Firearms Instructors, and other specialty jobs. 

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Be at least 19 years of age.
  2. Be a United States Citizen.
  3. Possess at a minimum an associate degree or have 60 college credits. Bachelor’s Degree preferred but not required. Prior military experience will also be considered.
  4. Have no felony convictions. 
  5. Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s license.
  6. MCOLES {Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards} licensed. The Department of Public Safety accepts qualified out-of-state certified officers.
  7. Possess or can complete a fire academy and obtain certification in Michigan as a Firefighter I and II and Medical First Responder Certification.
  8. Be of good moral character.
  9. Have not been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.
