The City of Charlotte, Michigan is seeking well qualified candidates for the position of Police Captain. Under the supervision of the Chief of Police, performs professional police administration, strategic planning, as well as coordinating and supervising the daily work of the police department which includes 16 total employees- 4 Sergeants, 1 Detective, 1 Administrative Assistant, and 12 Patrol Officers. The Police Captain will also be responsible for assisting in the formulation of department policies and procedures, be actively involved in the annual budget process and oversee matters related to professional standards. This position assumes command of the Police Department in the absence of the Chief of Police.
Candidates must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Position requires substantial contact with the general public, court officials and other city officials in the performance of their police duties.
Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition, ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with subordinates, supervisors and administration. Ability to exercise good sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
REQUIREMENTS
- Associates Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field with a Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Must be licensed by MCOLES.
- Must possess a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
- No felony convictions and/or disqualifying histories or poor driving record. Must be able to read and write the English language.
- Must be of good moral and ethical character.
- Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in law enforcement.
- Ability to complete all phases of the selection process.
HOURS, WAGES and BENEFITS
- Salary range is 70K-80K depending on qualifications.
- Hours are M-F but are subject to emergency call ins.
- This is a full-time, non-union position, with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, optical, and the MERS Hybrid retirement plan.
