City of Davison: Full-time Police Chief Closing Date: December 8, 2023 @ 4:00 pm

The City of Davison is seeking a full-time Police Chief. The city is about 1.9 square miles located in eastern Genesee County and has an approximate population of 5,055 residents. The Chief is appointed by and holds the office at the pleasure of the City Council, but is responsible and under the general supervision of the City Manager. The Chief is an important member of the city's leadership team and works closely with the City Manager and other department heads to ensure the best possible service to the Davison Community and citizens. The Chief has a well-established working relationship with the Davison Community School District, as there are five schools located in the City of Davison and an assigned SRO at the Davison Middle School. 
The City Police Chief manages day to day operations of the police department. This includes, but is not limited to planning, and directing police services to protect the lives and property of the public. Establishes and administers departmental policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to police activities, department personnel, and overall department administration. 

The Police Chief is also responsible for all resources and programs of the police department. The Chief oversees a police budget of approximately $1.4 million. The Department includes the Chief, Office Manager, Detective/Sergeant, six (6) full-time patrol officers, and four (4) part-time patrol officers. Officers work 12-hour shifts. The Chief is expected to be available as needed to fulfill the duties of the position and will generally be available during regular business hours. 

Minimum Qualifications and Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Certification as a police officer by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). 
  • A valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record. 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field is required. 
  • Ten or more years of experience in progressively responsible supervisory/command in law enforcement and related administrative duties. 
  • Considerable knowledge of local, state, and federal statutes. 
  • Knowledge of union contracts, contract negotiations, contract administration, and grievance procedures. 
  • Skills in leading, delegating, and supervising the work of others in routine and emergency situations. 
  • Skills in equipment, computers, and related software. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, maintain records and reports, and handle highly sensitive and confidential information under stressful and dangerous emergency situations.  
  • The desire and ability to fulfill the duties of a patrol officer, both independently and as a backup for other officers, as needed given the size of the department.


The starting salary is $75,000 - $82,000 (DOQ) with an excellent competitive benefit package.
