General Description:

A full-time police officer is considered an employee that enforces state laws and local ordinances, and arrests suspected violators of the law pursuant to statutory and constitutional requirements.  A full-time police officer responds to citizen-initiated calls for services and conducts self-initiated investigations while patrolling a specifically defined geographic area.  A full-time police officer prepares various reports and documents; discharges other related administrative duties and responsibilities; and does related work, as required. A full-time police officer is a sworn officer and possesses all police powers and responsibilities as provided by law. 

Candidate Qualifications: 

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • College graduate with an Associates Degree (preferably in Criminal Justice).
  • Graduate of an MCOLES approved basic police academy
  • Possess MCOLES certification qualifications
  • Possess a valid Michigan operators license and have a good driving record, as defined by the department.
  • Have no felony convictions and no serious record of misdemeanor convictions; must not have been adjudicated psychologically unfit; must be of good moral character.
    Pass the examination process, which may include:
  • Written examinations
  • Psychological screening
  • Oral interview
  • Physical agility testing (Physical capacity requirements: position requires walking, climbing, standing, bending, stooping, twisting, lifting, reaching, handling, grasping, bicycle operation, finger dexterity and/or feeling, sitting, talking, hearing and visual acuity).
  • Medical examination, with drug screening
  • Comprehensive background investigation
  • Possess normal hearing, normal color vision, and normal visual functions and acuity in each eye correctable to 20/20. Normal color vision shall be determined by medically approved testing measures.
  • The applicant must be free of any serious physical or mental defects or impairment that would prevent active participation as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Successful completion of the departments Field Training Program

Position Scheduling: 

  • Scheduling is based on shift work (i.e., Days, Nights, Split-Shifts & Special Events). 
  • Current patrol scheduling is on 12-hour shifts.

Some of the Salary & Benefits per POAM contract as defined:

  • $51,509.25 Starting, with Top Pay at $68,679 at beginning of year four.
  • MERS Defined Pension Benefit with 2.0 Multiplier.

  • 160 hour compensation time bank as determined by the Chief of Police
