The City of Charlotte, Michigan is seeking well qualified candidates for the position of Police Officer. The Charlotte Police Department is a 17-person progressive department that seeks professional candidates with potential for growth and focus on a long-term career with our agency.
The Charlotte Police Department is a full-service department with Specialized teams of highly trained officers as Evidence Technicians, Accident Reconstructionist, Firearms Instructors, Emergency Vehicle Instructors, School Resource Officers, Crime Prevention Officers, Mountain Bicycle Patrol, Drug Enforcement Team, Taser Instructors, Field Training Officers and Defensive Tactics Instructor. The Department hosts its own annual training at our training facility here in the city as well as hosts outside agencies to train in our new classroom facility in City Hall.
Duties include patrolling city streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the laws and city ordinances. Traffic control, enforcement, crime prevention, detection and investigation of incidents involving misdemeanors, felonies and other law violations are a part of the job tasks for this position.
Hours include working 12-hour shifts, weekends, holidays, dayshift, nightshift and on an overtime basis.
Candidates must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Position requires substantial contact with the general public, court officials and other city officials in the performance of their police duties.
Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition, ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with subordinates’ peers, supervisors and administration. Ability to exercise good sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions are mandatory.
REQUIREMENTS
- Associates Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field with a Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Must be certified, certifiable as a Police Officer by MCOLES, or currently attending an MCOLES certified training academy.
- Must possess a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
- No felony convictions and/or disqualifying histories or poor driving record. Must be able to read and write the English language.
- Must be of good moral and ethical character.
- Must be 21 years of age
- Ability to complete all phases of the selection process
HOURS, WAGES and BENEFITS
This is a full-time position with hourly rates from $ 23.13 to $33.82, plus a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental and optical. Starting wage, and vacation time credit, potentially higher for those candidates with previous experience and clean backgrounds. Shift premiums of $1/hr paid for certain shifts assigned. Senior Officer pay for certain shifts at $1.50/hr.
