Michigan's AmeriCorps Site Supervisor of the Month
Dorothy Junkin understands what it’s like to serve as an AmeriCorps member with Superior AmeriCorps because she is an alumna of the program herself. Now, in addition to being a Head Start teacher at BHK Child Development in Hancock, Michigan, she’s also an AmeriCorps site supervisor for Superior AmeriCorps members.
The Superior AmeriCorps program trains AmeriCorps members to serve pre-kindergarten through third-grade rural students at risk of reading failure to improve literacy skills by increasing the frequency of read-aloud experiences.
Dorothy is committed to helping her members achieve success during their term of service. Scheduling classroom time for Superior AmeriCorps can be complicated, but Dorothy is able to effortlessly handle scheduling and helps members at her site manage their service hours. That was especially important this year with the many snow days that disrupted the school calendar and AmeriCorps members’ service activities. Dorothy has been vigilant in helping members figure out how to make up hours missed this past winter.
Dorothy also helps members grow and learn from experiences in her class. She is always looking to help members achieve their personal and career development goals. Dorothy encourages member creativity by giving her members the freedom to design and lead small group activity sessions so they can learn new skills that will translate to their future careers.
“She has been a great site supervisor,” stated AmeriCorps member Savannah de Luca. “She genuinely cares about the AmeriCorps members and her encouragement and support is greatly appreciated.”
