Craig VanBuren, Laboratory Division DirectorCraig VanBuren, Laboratory Division Director for the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, was recently elected as chair of the National Conference on Weights and Measures for 2019-2020 during their annual meeting in Milwaukee.

“I am honored to represent Michigan on a national stage to help protect consumers and business across the nation,” said VanBuren. “Having accurate devices and uniform standards ensure consumers get the quantity that they pay for and businesses sell the quantity that they advertise.”

The National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) is a professional nonprofit association of state and local weights and measures officials, federal agencies, manufacturers, retailers and consumers. NCWM has developed national weights and measures standards since 1905. The organization brings the right interests together to keep pace with innovative advancements in the marketplace.

“MDARD’s Weights and Measures Program is the only agency that protects both consumers and industry from economic fraud,” said MDARD Director Gary McDowell. “Our inspectors are dedicated to making sure that all Michiganders are getting what they pay for when buying or selling anything sold by weight, count or measure.”

The Weights and Measures Program is one of the oldest consumer protection agencies enacted into law. This program responds statewide to consumer and industry complaints and conducts random audits for fraudulent activity, accuracy, and permanence on the estimated 200,000+ weighing and measuring devices located at approximately 40,000 establishments. This includes inspecting for electronic skimming devices used to capture personal credit card information, where card readers are utilized. The program conducts random audits of prepackaged commodities to ensure the proper method of sale, net content, and labeling of the millions of products sold in Michigan daily.
