- About Avian Influenza
Avian Influenza (AI), commonly called the bird flu, is a disease found among a wide variety of birds. AI viruses can infect domestic poultry that include chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail, ducks, geese, and guinea fowl. Additionally, it infects a wide variety of other birds, including wild migratory waterfowl. The strains of AI that have been reported in recent news releases has not been found to affect humans. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) considers the risk to people form these H5 infections found in wild birds, backyard flocks and commercial poultry to be low. AI viruses are classified into low and high pathogenicity forms based on the severity of illness they cause in poultry. The low pathogenicity AI (LPAI) cause mild clinical signs, whereas the high pathogenicity AI (HPAI) causes severe clinical signs and are often associated with high death rates in affected birds.
