Jeff Schaner
Deputy Director of the Animal Industry Division
Jeff Schaner is Deputy Director for the Animal Industry Division of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). He oversees the division’s operations to protect, regulate, and promote animal health.
A graduate of Michigan State University, Jeff earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental biology, with a concentration in zoology. Jeff began his work with the Animal Industry Division over 20 years ago as Student Assistant helping with the Bovine Tuberculosis eradication program. Over the years, Jeff has served in many roles including co-lead of the Department’s Project L.E.A.D. where he worked to better connect field and office-based staff and make Michigan a national leader with cattle Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) data collection infrastructure. Jeff is an alumnus of the Great Lakes Leadership Academy Emerging Leader program and used that experience to help build MDARD’s Lean Process Improvement Team.
Jeff lives in Hart on Michigan’s west side with his wife, Kristine, and their three children. Jeff stays involved in his local community and is currently serving as Treasurer for the Board of Education of Hart Public Schools. He has also served as a Den Leader and Cubmaster for the local Cub Scout pack and co-presided over the Spitler Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) with Kristine.
The Schaners live on property that has been in the family for 150 years, where they make maple syrup the old-fashioned way and raise meat chickens. Jeff enjoys working the old family fruit stand each summer, as well as camping, hiking, and appreciates Michigan’s great outdoors in every season.
