Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM

Director of the Animal Industry Division

Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM, is the State Veterinarian and Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Animal Industry Division (AID). Dr. Wineland and the staff of AID work daily to achieve their mission of protecting, regulating, and promoting animal health throughout the state.

To accomplish this mission, the division mainly focuses on three key functions: monitoring and responding to reportable diseases, ensuring animal traceability, and licensing and inspecting certain animal-related businesses—such as registered animal shelters, aquaculture facilities, and livestock haulers. Together, these efforts help to ensure animal welfare as well as limit the spread of diseases that could negatively impact Michigan’s agricultural economy and public health.

The efforts of the division are further strengthened and amplified through collaboration with other state and federal agencies, industry stakeholders, and other animal health partners.

Dr. Wineland has been serving as the State Veterinarian and leading the division since 2018. Prior to assuming this role, she worked extensively in regulatory medicine implementing national disease eradication programs, developing national livestock health studies, and serving as the first head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Center for Animal Welfare. These experiences have helped her to develop a broad network of partnerships and value collaboration when confronting challenges.

Dr. Wineland earned her DVM from Michigan State University and later received a Masters in Epidemiology from Colorado State University. Also, she is board certified in veterinary preventive medicine. She lives in Mason with her husband and has three grown daughters. Dr. Wineland and her husband also own a small sheep farm, and she enjoys gardening and running.
