James Johnson

Director of the Environmental Stewardship Division

Jim Johnson has worked for the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) for 35 years. He is the Environmental Stewardship Division’s (ESD) Director charged with providing administration and oversight of several working lands management programs, including the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program, Right to Farm Program, Farmland and Open Space Preservation Program, Intercounty Drain Program, Migrant Labor Housing Program, and Conservation Programs.

Before working for MDARD, Jim received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Michigan Technological University. Afterward, Jim began teaching algebra, pre-calculus, and biology at Constantine High School and spent the summers working for the St. Joseph County Conservation District as an Irrigation Specialist. Jim’s agricultural career began working with growers in St. Joseph County on irrigation water management and systems evaluation for distribution and pumping efficiency.

Jim’s primary career focus is on program development and implementation to address potential risks to the environment related to farming practices while providing economic growth opportunities within Michigan’s agricultural industries.
