Mike Philip

Director of the Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Division

Michael (Mike) Philip is the director of the Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Division (PPPMD) in the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). This division regulates pesticides, fertilizers, feed, seed, and nursery stock; certifies plants and plant products for market access in Michigan, throughout the country, and around the world; and prevents and responds to invasive pests and plant diseases. The Division’s mission is to protect human and animal health and the environment while fostering a diverse and viable Michigan agriculture.

Before becoming the PPPMD director in 2019, Mike spent 17 years in the Division’s Plant Health Section, where he coordinated detection and response efforts for invasive species and managed the state’s plant nursery licensing and inspection program.

Mike holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in entomology from Michigan State University and North Carolina State University, respectively, and is a graduate of the State of Michigan’s Quality of Life Leadership Academy. In addition, Mike is MDARD’s representative on the MSU Extension and AgBioResearch State Advisory Council and is active in the National Plant Board and Project GREEEN.

Mike and his wife Elizabeth live in East Lansing with their three school-age children. Together, they enjoy school band, orchestra events, and traveling the world.
