Lansing — Mary Engelman, Executive Director of the Michigan Women’s Commission (MWC), has been named Deputy Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR). She replaces Carol Viventi, who has accepted a position with former Governor John Engler, Interim President of Michigan State University.
Engelman will begin her duties on Monday, February 5.
“The Department of Civil Rights will benefit from Mary’s broad skill set working in the private sector, and most recently, leading the Michigan Women’s Commission,” said Agustin Arbulu, MDCR Director. “Mary’s contacts through her work with the MWC and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce will help her navigate among our partners in state government and the legislature. This appointment will enable us to continue our work at MDCR with minimal disruption. We will certainly miss Carol’s leadership, and wish her the best in her new role at MSU.”
Before she was appointed to lead the MWC by Governor Snyder in November 2016, Engelman served as the director of government affairs and public relations for OpTech LLC. She was previously the executive director for the Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce and president and CEO of the Farmington/Farmington Hills Chamber of Commerce.
Engelman holds a bachelor of science in English from Evangel University.
