LANSING, MI -- The Michigan Civil Rights Commission extended the deadline to apply for the position of Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. The new deadline is Dec. 31, 2019.

The Commission approved a job description and search process on Nov. 18, 2019. During that meeting, the body placed a 30-day application window on the job search. That window would have ended Dec. 17.

“We have been pleased with the current group of applications, but we realized with the holidays some people may have been unable to meet the tight timeline,” said Alma Wheeler Smith, chair of the Commission. “By extending the deadline, we hope to alleviate some of the stress and also broaden the national outreach scope so that we are certain we are hiring the most experienced person to helm the Department.”

Those interested in applying for the position can find out more information and submit their applications at the Michigan Civil Service Commission website.

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission was created by the Michigan Constitution to safeguard constitutional and legal guarantees against discrimination. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights, the investigational arm of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and working to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department also provides information and services to businesses on diversity initiatives and equal employment law.
