LANSING, MI--Today, Michigan Department of Civil Rights Director James E. White issued the following statement in response to the Kalamazoo City Commission decision to fund an assessment of the city's progress toward achieving its diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
“Becoming a truly diverse, equitable and inclusive community begins with an honest assessment of where we have been and where we are now. I am encouraged that the city of Kalamazoo has earmarked funding to do just that, with the goal of uprooting systemic bias throughout city government and working toward transformational change that will promote positive outcomes for all the residents of Kalamazoo.”
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and works to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. It also provides information and services to businesses on diversity initiatives and equal employment law.
