Director Arbulu thanks participants in March 28th public hearings into the Grand Rapids Police Department

Dear residents of Grand Rapids,

We want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who attended the Michigan Department of Civil Rights listening sessions in Grand Rapids yesterday, and especially those of you who spoke of your personal experiences and encounters with the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD). In total, more than 80 individuals delivered powerful and heartfelt testimony.

We take yesterday’s proceedings and the information you shared with us with the utmost seriousness. I will be working with senior staff to evaluate your testimony and decide on next steps. As soon as that process is complete, we will announce what those next steps will be. We will proceed with all due diligence and ask for your patience as we make sure we complete our evaluation.

In the interim, if you or someone you know would like to submit comments in writing about your experience with the GRPD, there’s still time. We will accept email submissions at gmoffitt@michigan.gov through 5:00 pm Friday, April 5. Lastly, on behalf of our department, we want to thank the Grand Rapids NAACP for hosting us along with other organizations for their help in making Thursday’s hearings possible.

Sincerely,

Dr. Agustin V. Arbulu
Executive Director
Michigan Department of Civil Rights
