LGBTQ Liaison

all-inclusive pride flag

The LGBTQ Liaison is MDCR's principal connection to the 2SLGBTQQIAAP community. The primary goals are as follows:

  • to establish and maintain a substantive relationship with the collective LGBTQ+ community, the constituent entities thereof, and LGBTQ+ individuals throughout the state of Michigan;
  • to engage in meaningful dialogue with these entities and their advocates to address LGBTQ-related concerns; and
  • to be a reliable conduit between the MDCR and the LGBTQ community at-large, particularly as relates to LGBTQ+ rights under civil rights laws and inequities impacting the LGBTQ+ community.

In addition, the LGBTQ Liaison serves as an LGBTQ subject matter resource for the MDCR, the MI DEI, the SOM, and the general public.

Key objectives for the LGBTQ Liaison include the following:

  • to identify LGBTQ+ entities throughout Michigan and conduct outreach to the same—large and small, public and private, religious and secular, educational and vocational at PRIDE festivals, meetings, and events across the state;
  • to elevate the visibility of LGBTQ+ people and raise awareness of obstacles that deny equal opportunity and equal access to queer individuals based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression;
  • to create and facilitate LGBTQ+ cultural competency trainings as internal and external education to promote understanding of what it means to be LGBTQ+ and to familiarize attendees with obstacles that many queer individuals face in order to foster environments that are safe and welcoming to LGBTQ+ people;
  • to partner with LGBTQ+ and ally organizations to brainstorm and pursue solutions to conditions that disproportionately expose LGBTQ+ individuals to violence and hate crimes.
