2018-2019 Insurance Open Enrollment Changes

This year, Insurance Open Enrollment runs from August 1st through August 24th and eligible State of Michigan employees will want to be aware of two upcoming changes. This year’s big news is the introduction of two new carriers in time for the 2018-19 plan year, which starts October 7, 2018.

New State Vision Plan Carrier: EyeMed

EyeMed LogoFirst, effective October 1, 2018, EyeMed will be replacing Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan/VSP as the administrator of the State Vision Plan. For existing enrollees in the current State Vision Plan, BCBSM/VSP coverage will end on September 30, 2018. Current enrollees in the State Vision Plan under BCBSM/VSP will be automatically transitioned to EyeMed on October 1, 2018 and there will be no gap in coverage. Benefit coverage will not be changing. New HMO Option: United Healthcare

The other change is United Healthcare being offered as a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) option for the first time in the 2018-2019 plan year. Like all other HMOs, eligibility for enrollment in this plan is based on your residential zip code, with theirs primarily covering the Southeast and Western regions of the state. Whether considering United Healthcare or any other State of Michigan HMO health plan option, employees are encouraged to use the EBD web site’s HMO/DMO Zip Code Tool. This tool will allow you to determine your eligibility for all HMO plans, dictated by their coverage area. If you are adding a dependent to your insurance, any required supporting documentation must be provided to the MI HR Service Center by September 30, 2018. If required supporting documentation is not received by September 30, 2018, your dependent(s) will not be attached to coverage(s). To enroll, visit the HR Gateway and log-in to HR Self-Service. Keep in mind, if you do not make any changes, your coverage and covered individuals will remain the same. You may also call the MI HR Service Center at 877-766-6447 to walk through enrollment with a MI HR representative. Please refer to individual plan summaries for details on coverage.

Remember, IOE is your once-a-year opportunity to review, change, enroll in, or add individuals to your benefits, so you are strongly encouraged to do so to ensure you and your covered eligible dependents have the necessary coverage for the coming year.
