LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is seeking information regarding assessment tools that may be used by local school districts with students up to 3rd grade to address requirements identified in the state’s so-called the “3rd Grade Reading” law (MCL 380.1280f).

MDE is requesting assessment vendors, researchers, research centers, and school districts that wish to recommend assessments for the 2018-19 list of state-mandated assessment tools to:

1.    Review these rubrics:

Applicants need to email all supporting documents as outlined in the application to MDE-EarlyLiteracy@michigan.gov.

The submission window for all items is March 9, 2018, to 6 p.m. March 23, 2018.

Late assessments or supporting material will not be considered for approval for 2018-2019.

Current MDE-Approved Assessment Lists are available here:

http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-28753_74161-410821--,00.html.

Those currently on the list need not submit any additional information as these assessments automatically will appear on the 2018-2019 list. Those only submit documentation if there have been updates, additions, or corrections made since the original submission, or if vendors want to add a new assessment to the list. Entities wanting to submit more than one assessment must complete a separate submission for each assessment.

Local districts may only submit for consideration an application and documentation for district-created assessments.

Districts wanting to see a particular vendor-created assessment on the list should encourage the vendor to participate in the information submission process.

MDE staff will review all listed assessments for both Initial and Extensive levels of the assessment system. Reviewers may request additional information from the submitting entity during the process.

Updated lists will be published by April 30, 2018 and can be found with additional guidance at http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-28753_74161-410821--,00.html

Questions regarding this process, as well as submission of supporting documents providing additional information regarding these assessments, can be emailed to MDE-EarlyLiteracy@michigan.gov
