LANSING – Dates and locations have been finalized for further Listen & Learn sessions to take public input on the proposed draft state Social Studies standards for public schools, the Michigan Department of Education announced today.

“We want to hear from residents across Michigan and get their feedback on updating the state’s content standards for Social Studies in our K-12 schools,” said Interim State Superintendent Sheila Alles. “Interest in the proposed updated standards was so great that we decided to extend public comment and add these six additional input sessions around the state.”

These will bring to a total of 17 Listen & Learn sessions the Michigan Department of Education has offered, in addition to an online public comment opportunity available. Input still can be provided online through September 30. Go to www.michigan.gov/mde and click the “Request For Public Comment” box to access the proposed draft version of the Social Studies standards and to offer online comments.

When this extended four-month public comment period ends on September 30, the Michigan Department of Education’s panel of experts comprised of authors of the original draft standards; focus group members; Social Studies educators from across the state; a representative from the Michigan Department of Civil Rights; and representatives of diverse populations in Michigan, will review the comments and make adjustments to the recommended standards that will go to the State Board of Education to consider for adoption.
