Ensure ready access to naloxone
In the event of an opioid overdose, there is drug that can be used treat an overdose. Naloxone is a life-saving drug used to treat opioid overdose. Naloxone is not able to be abused. Naloxone is covered by Medicaid and many other insurances. Many non-profit organizations also distribute Naloxone.
In 2016, Michigan passed a Naloxone standing order law. This allows a pharmacist to dispense Naloxone without identifying a particular patient. Family, friends, or others can obtain Naloxone to use in an emergency. Rules are currently being written to implement the standing order.
