Mental Health First Aid is a 8-hour training certification course which teaches participants a five-step action plan to assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure appropriate care for the individual.  The certification program introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews common treatments.   Thorough evaluations in randomized controlled trials and a quantitative study have proved the CPR-like program effective in improving trainees' knowledge of mental disorders, reducing stigma and increasing the amount of help provided to others.  Youth Mental Health First aid course is intended for adults who are working with or interacting with youth.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Expands in Michigan through Project Aware!

Michigan was one of 19 states awarded the 2014 - 2019 NITT-Project AWARE-SEA grant by SAMHSA.   Its purpose is to build and expand Michigan Department of Education’s capacity to increase awareness of mental health issues among school-aged youth, provide training for school personnel and other adults who interact with school-aged youth to detect and respond to mental health issues in children and young adults, and connect children, youth, and families who may have behavioral health issues with appropriate services. YMHFA trainings will be offered in three primary Intermediate School Districts (Jackson, Kent, Oakland) and beyond!
