CAP Requirements for Newborn Screening (NBS) Specimen Tracking
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has issued two new standards regarding newborn screening (NBS) that will affect laboratories submitting specimens for NBS. The two new requirements are GEN.40545 Newborn Screening Specimen Tracking and GEN.41325 Newborn Screening Results.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of Laboratories has the following suggestions to meet these new requirements.
GEN.40545 The MDHHS NBS laboratory is instituting an electronic web portal that will allow submitters to determine the date of specimen receipt and date of test result. The Agency will be able to:
- Enter demographic information electronically on samples instead of completely filling out the form on the NBS blood card. Some data will still need to be recorded on the card so that the sample can be matched up with the demographics once the card is received at MDHHS.
- Search for any specimen submitted by their agency for NBS and display date of specimen receipt and date of test result.
An agency will not need to do #1 above, in order to do searches as described in #2. Specimen searches may be done using the web portal on any specimen submitted by that agency. We expect to have the web portal live by the end of 2014.
GEN.41325 The MDHHS NBS Epidemiology Unit is responsible for follow-up on positive and unsatisfactory NBS specimens. The procedure that this Unit uses for repeat and positive specimens may be viewed or downloaded.

Medicaid Claims to Require Physician's NPI
Effective October 1, 2013, the ordering physician’s NPI is required by CHAMPS for all Medicaid claims submitted to the MDHHS Bureau of Laboratories. In addition, the ordering physician must be enrolled in CHAMPS. Failure to supply the ordering physician’s NPI on the test requisition form AND enroll as a provider in CHAMPS will result in a rejected claim. Your office will be billed if Medicaid rejects the claim.
If you are not enrolled as a provider then call 800-292-2550 and select option 3 to enroll in CHAMPS. Enrollment is free of charge.
