MDCH Issues Request for Proposals for Programs Recognizing National Minority Health Month

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), Division of Health, Wellness and Disease Control, Health Disparities Reduction and Minority Health Section (HDRMHS) announces the issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for April, 2011 Minority Health Month activities.

The theme for the 2011 Minority Health Month is "Empowerment through Education and Awareness: Impact of Health Care Reform on Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations in Michigan." Activities for Minority Health Month will focus on assuring health equity for racial and ethnic minority populations in Michigan related to one or both of the following:

1) The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act-PPACA (health care reform law) and

2) Promoting Healthy Nutrition Among School Age Children "Bring It or Buy It - Make Lunch Healthy, Green and Good!" as adopted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health.

The MDCH will fund up to 35 mini grants in the range of $1,500 to $5,000. Community-and faith-based organizations, Tribal Councils, local health departments, community health centers, hospitals, schools and other entities that can demonstrate experience and relationships in organizing culturally competent, health related activities focused on the five racial and ethnic minority populations served by the HDRMHS are eligible to apply for funding. The five racial and ethnic minority populations served by the HDRMHS are African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Arab and Chaldean, Native American/American Indian and Asian American. A conference call will be held on Friday, Jan. 14 at 2:00 p.m. for potential applicants. Responses to the RFP are due no later than 5:00 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2011.
