Michigan Recognizes Health Centers Role in Providing Healthcare Services to Residents

LANSING, Mich. – Governor Rick Snyder and the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) are joining the Michigan Primary Care Association (MPCA) by proclaiming this week, August 10-16, Health Center Week in Michigan to raise awareness and recognize the important role health centers play in providing healthcare to Michigan residents.

“This week we highlight the significant contributions our health centers make to the healthcare community and the people we serve,” said James K. Haveman, director of the MDCH. “For any Michigander looking for health services in their community, I encourage them to visit their local health center who can help them find the care they need.”

For almost 50 years, health centers have worked to make primary and preventive care more accessible to Michigan’s medically underserved populations. Today, there are 38 health center organizations in Michigan partnering with their communities to serve more than 600,000 residents through 240 delivery sites across the state. One in every 16 people living in Michigan relies on the services of a health center.

In addition to comprehensive healthcare services, health centers also provide support services such as education, translation, and transportation, that promote access to care. This year, Michigan extended healthcare coverage to low-income Michiganders through the Healthy Michigan Plan. Health centers and the MPCA provided, and continue to provide, vital support in getting people enrolled in the plan by conducting outreach and continuing education efforts.

Health centers function as a local engine for healthier communities and a healthier Michigan by providing high quality, cost-effective healthcare to all Michigan residents, regardless of an individual’s insurance status or ability to pay. Services are available to any Michigan resident with fees adjusted based on ability to pay.
