Michigan Surgeon General to Promote National HIV Test Day

June 26, 2003

Michigan Department of Community Health Surgeon General, Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom, will promote National HIV Test Day at two locations in Detroit on Friday, June 27, 2003.  “Knowledge is power,” said Wisdom.  “Get tested, get the results.”

11:00 a.m.—Dr. Wisdom will hold a press availability at Community Health Awareness Group (CHAG), 3028 East Grand Boulevard, Detroit.

11:45 a.m.—Dr. Wisdom will hold a press availability at AIDS Partnership Michigan (APM), 2751 East Jefferson, Detroit.

This national public awareness campaign is designed to educate the public about HIV counseling, testing and referral and to encourage more people to assess their risk of HIV infection.  This year’s National Test Day theme, “Take the Test, Take Control” has been chosen to motivate individuals to be tested and by learning their test results, if positive, get treatment, and if negative, assess their risk and change behaviors that put them at risk.

“Early detection of HIV is vital in our fight against AIDS.  For the estimated quarter of a million Americans who are infected with HIV but don’t know it, knowing their status could save their lives,” said Dr. Wisdom.  “In Michigan, at testing sites funded by the Department, over 55,000 people get tested for HIV every year, and 550 of those tests are positive for HIV.”

Throughout Michigan, 65 agencies are participating in National HIV Test Day.  Testing for HIV is either anonymous or confidential and is offered through a variety of options.  Testing using a traditional blood draw which is accurate and safe, or the oral method of a swab of the inside of your mouth which will also provide quick, accurate and painless results.   Both testing options are offered at testing sites throughout Michigan to accommodate client needs.

“This is one day a year when local health departments and community-based organizations work in collaboration towards one goal, to provide HIV testing opportunities for at-risk populations,” said Wisdom.  “These opportunities are provided through mobile clinics, outreach at bars, parks and churches and community-wide events.”
