Fetal Development: Week 12

12 weeks after conception (about 3 months)

(14 weeks after the last menstrual period)

The fetus is about the size of a medium apple or 2 ¾ - 3 1/8 inches (2.75 – 3.125 inches) long from crown to rump (head to butt). The fetus weighs about 1 to 1 ½ ounces. The head is very large compared to the rest of the body. The face becomes more human looking. The ears are still basic. The eyes and ears move closer to the actual position. The fingers and toes are recognizable. The kidneys begin to make urine. External genitalia are formed. Movements begin, but are not usually felt by the woman.

A commercial apple ranges in size from 2.75 – 3.25 inches.
