Michigan Birth Defects Prevention Program - DATA and STATISTICS
The Public Health Code requires the State of Michigan to maintain a birth defects registry. The
Michigan Birth Defects Registry (MBDR) tracks more than 1,000 diagnoses of birth defects. This reporting
system allows the State to develop statewide statistics, conduct surveillance and ensure that families of
children with birth defects receive appropriate support services.
In Michigan:
- About 6% of the 114,717 newborns in 2010 were identified by one year of age as having a birth defect.
- Around 3% of live births from 2000-2010 were diagnosed with MAJOR birth defects. These defects include
but are not limited to: spina bifida, cleft lip and palate and heart conditions such as Tetralogy of Fallot and transposition of the great arteries. - Anomalies of the heart and circulatory system account for 15-16% of the conditions reported in 2010.
- The infant fatality rate in 2008-2010 was 34 deaths per 1,000 live births for babies with birth defects, compared to 7.3 deaths per 1,000 live births for all infants.
