Changes to Crime Victim Compensation

Changes to Crime Victim Compensation

On August 12, 2023, important statutory changes signed last year by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer went into effect, making Crime Victim Compensation even more accessible to victims, their families and loved ones throughout Michigan.

Under the new legislation, the maximum award limit has been increased, and more individuals impacted by crime physically, emotionally, psychologically or mentally may be eligible for compensation. In addition to medical expenses, counseling, lost wages and replacement services, compensation will be available for eligible claimants for items such as non-traditional therapies, transportation and relocation related expenses.

The Division of Victim Services looks forward to the implementation of legislative changes that will make compensation more widely available to crime victims and their family members.
