  • Bureau of Transportation Planning

    The Bureau of Transportation Planning’s role is to develop and implement a comprehensive transportation planning process which results in investments that are consistent with the financial, social, and economic policies of the State Transportation Commission. Major responsibilities include: strategic planning and policy development, multimodal planning, program management, maintaining federal aid eligibility, stewardship, planning for security and mobility, economic development, strategic information technology and tools, asset management, and operations-oriented process support.

  • Office of Passenger Transportation

    The Office of Passenger Transportation administers MDOT's passenger transportation programs, including local and intercity bus and for-hire passenger regulation, to provide a safe and balanced statewide network of passengers transportation services to meet the social, safety, and economic well-being of the state.

    The Office of Aeronautics administers the state airport development program providing project management for the programming, planning, design, safety evaluation, and construction of airports throughout Michigan. The Michigan Aeronautics Commission is responsible for the general supervision of aeronautics within the state. ​

  • International Bridge Administration

    The International Bridge Administration (IBA), an administrative entity within the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), is responsible for the operation, maintenance, toll collection, and administration of the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, customs and toll plazas in both Canada and Michigan. Policy and governance is at the direction of the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority Board of Directors, comprised of 4 Canadian members and 4 Michigan members, equally representing the Federal Bridge Corporation Ltd (a Canadian Crown Corporation) and the State of Michigan.​

  • Bureau of Bridges and Structures

    The MDOT Bureau of Bridges and Structures is responsible for Bridge and Structure Design, Bridge and Structure Construction, Bridge and Structure Asset Management, Bridge and Structure Maintenance, Bridge and Structure Geotechnical evaluation and design, and the Operation and Administration of the Blue Water Bridge. The Bureau manages all Bridge and Structure capital outlay, and maintenance funding statewide, and provides assistance to the MDOT Regions in administering bridge and structure projects. The primary mission is to ensure life safety of the public who uses state-owned bridges and structures, while ensuring structural adequacy and resiliency by having exceptional technical competency, and inspiring public confidence in our abilities and experience.

  • Bay Region

  • Grand Region

    The Grand Region manages more than 4,300 lane-miles of state trunkline (US, M and I routes) and 968 bridges in 13 counties: Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola and Ottawa. In addition to the Grand Region Office, there are three transportation service centers, five maintenance garages, one special crews garage, a sign shop, and an automotive/equipment maintenance facility.

  • Metro Region

    The Metro Region contains approximately 5,000 lanes miles, approximately 40% of the freeways and 40% of the state’s population within Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. The region is covered by three transportation service centers, two garages, and one welcome center.

  • North Region

    The North Region is responsible for the maintenance and repair of 4,344 lane miles of state highways and freeways in the northern 21 counties of the Lower Peninsula: Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Iosco, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, Montmorency, Oscoda, Ogemaw, Otsego, Presque Isle, Roscommon, and Wexford. In addition to the region office, North Region has three transportation service centers (Alpena, Gaylord and Traverse City), three operations facilities (Atlanta, Mio, and Kalkaska), two testing labs, a region sign shop, and one welcome center.

Office of Communications

  • The Office of Communications works with the media to inform the public of MDOT's mission, policies and practices in a positive, consistent and credible manner. It is responsible for media relations, social media, and website development, as well as graphical design, and photography and video services.

  • The Office of Economic Development provides innovative transportation solutions and funding assistance through the Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF), Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program, and State Infrastructure Bank (SIB) to support community economic development through collaboration and quality customer service. The office also supports and encourages development and redevelopment efforts that improve the health, safety, and welfare of Michigan residents.
