December 5, 2013 – Linda Hoath was recently elected as the 2014 chair of the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority (SSMBA) board of directors, the bi-national body which supervises operations of the International Bridge. Her election took place at the board's regular meeting Nov. 25.
Hoath, the executive director of the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Convention and Visitor's Bureau (CVB), has served as SSMBA board member since May 2011. She is currently vice chair of the board.
"I am extremely honored to serve on this board and will continue to support the sister cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, as well as the Ontario government and MDOT," Hoath said. "The great group of people here - from the board to administration to the staff - makes us all very proud to be board members."
The board's mission to ensure safe and efficient movement of people and goods over the International Bridge is crucial in promoting trade, tourism and economic development across the region, according to Hoath.
"The river connects us; the bridge just makes it easier to get across," she said.
Hoath has worked for the Sault Ste. Marie CVB since 2002, focusing on increased collaboration among Sault Ste. Marie and other communities in the eastern Upper Peninsula. She also serves on the Cloverland Electric Cooperative board of directors and previously worked as director of Kewadin Travel. She and her husband, Timothy Hoath, live in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. They have three adult children.
The SSMBA board consists of eight members, four Michigan members appointed by the governor and four Canadian members appointed by the St. Mary's River Bridge Company.
Current Chairman James McIntyre of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, was elected vice chairman for 2014. The other Canadian representatives on the board are Rick Talvitie and Helen Gillespie of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; and Glenn Hewus of Vancouver, British Columbia; the other U.S. representatives are Scott Shackleton of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; Stuart Bradley of Ishpeming; and Nicholas White of Petoskey.
The SSMBA board also set its 2014 meeting schedule. The board will meet in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on Feb. 20 and Aug.14; and in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on May 15 and Nov. 13.
