Late June 2019

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has three safety projects being performed in the cities of Dearborn Heights and Taylor between Van Born Road and Ecorse Road.  The projects include:

The addition of a dedicated left turn lane from southbound US-24 to eastbound Van Born Road and the intersection improved with new traffic signals and an upgrade to the sidewalk ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

Two overhead signs will be replaced, including the foundations, sign supports and signs on southbound US-24 between I-94 and Ecorse Road.

New sidewalk will be constructed along northbound and southbound US-24 through the interchange with Ecorse Road, including upgrading ramps to meet ADA standards. The City of Taylor secured a grant to install the new sidewalk which will connect with other sidewalks.

The construction of the dedicated left turn lane, signal work, and side walk upgrades require occasional lane closures during off-peak hours for both directions of US-24 and Van Born Road.

The sign installation work requires lane closures during off-peak hours on southbound US-24 from I-94 to Ecorse Road.

The sidewalk work requires the right lanes to be closed continuously on northbound and southbound US-24 near Ecorse Road. There will also be occasional closure of the Ecorse ramps to US-24.

Access will be maintained to all neighborhoods and businesses during construction. MDOT understands the impact this type of major work has on motorists and works as quickly and as safely as possible to get the job done while keeping drivers and workers safe.

The addition of a dedicated left turn lane on southbound US-24 along with the upgraded signals and sidewalks will improve the safety of this intersection. This will ensure that both drivers and pedestrians can safely use this major roadway.

The addition of the sidewalk and the ADA ramps on northbound and southbound US-24 near Ecorse Road will allow a safe passage through the busy intersection.

MDOT’s sign replacement program ensures the overhead signs are safely secured and are visible in all weather and light conditions.
