Public open house to discuss M-54 road diet in Genesee County April 4Contact: Jocelyn Hall, MDOT Office of Communications, HallJ20@Michigan.gov, 989-245-7117Agency: Transportation
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will hold a public open house to discuss the proposed road diet on M-54 from Coldwater Road to Mt. Morris Road in the city of Flint and Genesee Township.
MDOT plans to reduce the number of lanes on M-54 from four to three. The new configuration will include one lane in each direction with a dedicated center left-turn lane.
This lane reduction would be incorporated with road work planned for 2020.
This change is intended to help reduce rear-end and side-swipe crashes while improving nonmotorized mobility. Additional details of the planned work, including proposed shoulder widening and intersection improvements, will also be shared during the meeting.

Federal safety funding had been secured to incorporate shoulder widening with the proposed 2020 resurfacing of M-54 from Coldwater Road to Mt. Morris Road. Upon further investigation of crash patterns, traffic volumes, and nonmotorized mobility, MDOT intends to reduce the number of lanes to increase safety for all users. This change is intended to be incorporated along with additional improvements during the road repairs in 2020
