Welcome Centers & Rest Areas
Welcome Centers & Rest Areas
The Michigan Department of Transportation operates and maintains 77 rest areas along major freeways and roadways for the convenience of the traveling public; 14 of these are also Welcome Centers.
Michigan's welcome centers serve more than 7.5 million travelers annually. Maintained and operated by MDOT, they provide Pure Michigan travel and tourism information. Welcome center staff are knowledgeable members of the hospitality industry who assist travelers and work with the state's tourism industry to promote destinations, events and activities in Michigan.
Rest areas are open 24 hours a day, provide modern restroom facilities, telephones, picnic areas, pet exercise zones, paved parking areas, and fresh drinking water, and are located within an hour's travel time of each other.

Partnerships & Literature Displays
Local groups and organizations interested in supporting the welcome centers should contact their local welcome center to discuss partnership opportunities. Opportunities vary at each location but can include areas such as interpretive displays, special events, plantings in landscape, and flower beds. Michigan tourism-related businesses may distribute (upon receiving approval) travel-related brochures at all 14 welcome centers around the state.
