US-31 bridge work over US-12 getting underway

April 21, 2020 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is starting bridge repairs this week on US-31 over US-12 between Niles and Buchanan in Berrien County.

The $3.1 million investment includes repaving, joint replacement, pin and hanger replacement, painting, steel repair, concrete surface coating, curb and gutter, drainage, guardrail replacement, and new pavement markings.

Construction will include nighttime and weekend work. One lane of US-31 and US-12 will remain open in each direction throughout construction. There will be some ramp closures, and traffic will be detoured. Completion is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15.

This project will improve the ride quality for motorists and extend the service life of the bridge.
