Lane closures planned next week for Portage Lake Lift Bridge work
July 01, 2022
HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be conducting repairs on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock next Wednesday and Thursday, requiring southbound lane closures and limitations on bridge lifts.
During repairs, the outside southbound lane will be closed July 6, while the inside lane will be closed July 7. Repairs are expected to be performed from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. each day. The lift span will be in the lower position during repairs.
The U.S. Coast Guard has authorized MDOT to make temporary changes in the Portage Lake Lift Bridge operation rules during this work. From July 6 through July 8, the lift bridge will only open on the top of the hour from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, instead of opening twice an hour as currently authorized. From 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., the bridge will require a three-hour advance notice for openings. This schedule is tentative and may be adjusted.
Mariners should provide advance notice directly to the bridge operator by calling 906-482-7552.
This work will help ensure continued safe and reliable operation of the bridge.
