M-55 Improvements Project - Ogemaw County
Start: April 2023 End: October 2023
What Is Being Done
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is planning in 2023 to rebuild a section of M-55/I-75 Business Loop (BL) from Husted Drive to Fairview Street in Ogemaw Township and the city of West Branch. This project includes converting the existing five- and four-lane segments of the roadway to three lanes: one through-traffic lane in each direction and a center left-turn lane. This project will also include new hot-mix asphalt pavement, new curb and gutter, new sidewalks, drainage improvements, traffic signal modernization at Fairview Road and at M-55 East, new traffic signs, and new pavement markings. MDOT is also partnering with local units of government to include water service improvements, new streetscaping elements, and sidewalk/pathway connectivity in the project.
How Traffic Will Be Affected
During work, segments of the highway will be closed to traffic, with directional and full detours around the area being worked on. At other times, lanes will be closed with traffic shifted or traveling in alternating directions with traffic regulators or temporary traffic signals. Access to local businesses and residences will be maintained throughout the project. Non-local truck through-traffic will be detoured via I-75 and I-75 BL for the duration of the project.
The primary goal behind this lane conversion is safety. In 2015-2019, M-55 experienced 134 recorded traffic crashes from M-30 to Fairview Street, including two crashes that resulted in severe injuries. Three-lane sections have been shown to significantly reduce crashes by simplifying the driving experience, reducing conflict points and calming traffic. Three-lane sections are also more convenient and safer for pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly when they are crossing the roadway.
