Every year, the Michigan Department of Transportation produces an updated version of the state transportation map. The department also produces numerous geographic information system maps to assist commuters, tourists, and businesses.
At MDOT, safety is paramount. It is our goal to improve overall safety for all road users, internal staff, contractors performing work on roads, and emergency responders.
In Michigan, there are three publicly-owned and operated bridges: Mackinac Bridge, Blue Water Bridge, and International Bridge. There are also two privately-owned and operated border crossings: Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
The Bureau of Bridges and Structures is responsible for statewide policy and procedure development and execution to ensure all bridges and structures are designed, constructed, maintained, and operated to ensure safety of the traveling public.
The Bureau of Transportation Planning's role is to develop and implement a comprehensive transportation planning process which results in investments that are consistent with the financial, social, and economic policies of the State Transportation Commission. Major responsibilities include: strategic planning and policy development, multimodal planning, program management, maintaining federal aid eligibility, stewardship, planning for security and mobility, economic development, strategic information technology and tools, asset management, and operations-oriented process support.
MDOT provides technologies and partnerships to traditional practices in order to make the transportation system safer and less congested.

Transportation System Performance allows MDOT's regions and engineers to expand their knowledge on how Michigan freeways are operating over time and how they compare to each other. What Is Being Done?
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is currently preparing to begin road and bridge repair and rebuilding work on I-75 and US-23 in the village of Mackinaw City in both Emmet and Cheboygan counties.
I-75 will be resurfaced from Old M-108 north to the Mackinac Bridge, and the bridges over the Northwestern State Trail and Central Avenue will have maintenance work completed.
US-23 will be rebuilt from I-75 to Huron Avenue, a project that will include replacing the bridge superstructure for southbound US-23 over I-75, eliminating the existing boulevard between Old US-31 Highway and Nicolet Street, and replacing the traffic signal at Nicolet Street.
Other work includes detour route paving, drainage improvements, tree removal, sign replacement, and new pavement markings.
How Traffic Will Be Affected
During the work on the southbound US-23 bridge over I-75, southbound US-23 traffic will be detoured on local streets, including Jamet Street, Louvigny Street, Central Avenue, and Nicolet Street. This detour will be in place for most of the construction season, from spring until fall.
Primarily, I-75 traffic will be maintained with lane closures and traffic shifts; however, at times, I-75 traffic will also be detoured using local routes.
Additional Information
MDOT will continue work in the village of Mackinaw City by rebuilding US-23 from Huron Avenue southeasterly approximately 3.3 miles to the Mill Creek Discovery Park entrance in Cheboygan County.
In 2023, the entire roadway will be reconstructed. The center left turn lane will end just northwesterly of Stimpson Road, and passing flares are planned to be built at Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground and at the Mill Creek Discovery Park Entrance. Other work includes culvert replacements, tree clearing, sign replacement, and new pavement markings.
During this work, traffic will be maintained on US-23 using traffic regulators and temporary traffic signals. Plans are currently in development and anticipated to be completed in mid-2022.
