Michigan Iron Industry Museum - Lost and Found: The Henry B. Smith
If you appreciate stories of Michigan's heritage, drop by the museum on select Tuesday afternoons in the summer. You'll discover the U.P.'s intriguing history, courtesy of a variety of experts who are eager to share their knowledge and research with you. Programs are also available on the Michigan Iron Industry Museum Facebook page.
The “white hurricane” storm of November 1913 was the worst weather event ever to hit the Great Lakes. More than 250 sailors died, and a dozen ships vanished, sinking with their entire crews. During a lull in the storm, the big steel freighter Henry B. Smith set sail from Marquette, never to be seen again for a hundred years. Today, author and local historian Dan Fountain shares historical photos and unique underwater video and sonar imagery of this historic local shipwreck.
The Michigan Iron Industry Museum—one of the Michigan History Center's museums and historic sites—is located eight miles west of Marquette. Read more Michigan Iron Industry Museum visitor information.
