National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, April 27

April 25, 2019

EGLE's Household Drug Take Back Map ImageLaw enforcement from across Michigan and throughout the nation will help residents dispose of unwanted medications responsibly during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27.  In its 18th year, the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Take Back Day provides an opportunity for safe, responsible disposal of unneeded prescription medications.

According to the 2017 National Study on Drug Use and Health, six million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study also found that most abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, and often from home medicine cabinets.

Participation in take back programs, as well as continuous disposal of unused medications, helps prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.  In addition, ensuring that collected medications are properly destroyed can keep them from entering our lakes, rivers, and streams.

It is also possible to take action throughout the year by identifying collection options across the state by using Michigan's Drug Take Back Map. The map can help identify take back location options by using the location on tablets or phones, or through entering a zip code on a computer.
