A brownfield redevelopment grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) will help Sanborn Township and a local business owner redevelop a former gas station in Ossineke. The brownfield grant will help protect residents, customers, and workers from petroleum contamination.
This property was once on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Priorities List (NPL) when residents noticed the smell of petroleum in their drinking water. The odors were believed to originate from an old gas station that operated on the property between 1974 to 1995. In June 1986, the EPA continued to sample the groundwater in the area and replaced several community water supplies. Later in March 1992, a release was reported from the former gas station property, and in December 1995, several gasoline underground storage tanks were removed from the property.
The site was eventually removed from the NPL in 2002 and the state of Michigan became the lead agency.
The $220,000 brownfield redevelopment grant will be used for soil and water investigation, proper disposal of contaminated soil, building demolition, and a vapor mitigation system to prevent harmful vapors from entering the future building.
The new development will be a market with a full-service deli and a new U.S. post office branch, creating 12 new jobs. A local business owner plans to invest another $300,000 into the community. The brownfield grant, coupled with enthusiastic project partners including the Sanborn Township Board, Sagasser & Associates and Janice Adams of EGLE are working together to clean up this property for safe reuse.
