Leaking underground storage tank.UPDATE: The Grand Rapids conference has sold out.

Spots are still available for the Michgian Petroleum Storage Tank Conferences in Grand Rapids (Oct. 9) and Dearborn (Oct. 23).

The Michigan Petroleum Association, Midwest Independent Retailers Association, and the American Petroleum Institute of Michigan approached the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) for help to assist owners and operators of gas stations, distributers, and trade contractors working in the petroleum industry to stay in compliance with state and federal training and operations requirements.

EGLE staff agreed to provide an opportunity for owners and operators to meet with the state agencies that provide oversight of the regulations for petroleum storage tanks, talk with state experts to ask questions about their own situations, and collaborate on problem solving to help overcome the obstacles they encounter. EGLE staff and the associations knew that whatever was offered would need to be relevant and worth owners' and operators' time away from their businesses. It needed to help owners and operators understand federal and state requirements. EGLE worked with our partners at the Michigan Departments of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and Agriculture and Rural Development, both of which oversee parts of the petroleum storage tank regulations, to develop a survey that was shared with the associations’ members. The survey offered great insight and the opportunity for the members to tell us what they needed to learn.

It was clear from the survey results that a short conference with brief regulatory overviews and lots of opportunity to ask questions would be the best approach. EGLE and its partners would share general information about everything from buying and selling contaminated property, how to meet financial responsibility for tanks and systems, to annual tank inspections. The Michigan Petroleum Storage Tank Conference was the result and was scheduled in three locations so people could attend without traveling long distances.

The first session of the Michigan Petroleum Storage Tank Conference was in Gaylord in early October. Two more locations -- Grand Rapids on October 9 and Dearborn on October 23 -- still have seats available for anyone with an interest in storage tank regulations. While the conference is primarily focused on petroleum storage tank owners and operators, anyone interested in the ownership, operation, contamination cleanup, or purchase of properties with tanks is invited to attend. There will be many opportunities to ask questions and talk with state agency staff. The cost is only $35 and that includes lunch. (Please note that Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development staff will only attend the Dearborn session.)
