Reduce your potential exposure to lead by using only cold tap water for cooking and food prep

Use cold water for cooking, not hot.

Use only cold tap water for cooking and food preparation. This is one way to reduce your overall potential exposure to lead from drinking water.

Pipes and plumbing in homes and other buildings can contain various amounts of lead, which is more likely to leach into the water when the water is hot. The potential for lead in water increases when hot tap water is used instead of your cold tap water for cooking and meal preparation.

Lead can be found in many plumbing materials, especially those installed before 2014.

While it may be tempting to use hot tap water to save time cooking, it's always best to use cold water.

What if you are using a filter at your tap? If you are using a sink mounted filter it may also be tempting to filter hot water. Sink mounted filters are only designed for the filtration of cold tap water. Filtering hot water can damage the filter which may reduce its ability to reduce lead in your water

Do you have an infant at home? Never use hot tap water when mixing up formula. Babies are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of lead exposure, and formula that is mixed with water containing lead can be a significant source of lead exposure.
