Harms called the meeting to order at 10:00 a. m.

Harms called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.

Staff Reports

  • Brian Conway, State Historic Preservation Officer
    • Rhonda Baker is the new board member and replaces Janese Chapman.  She was appointed in December 2013.
    • Gary Heidel the Chief Placemaking Officer for the State of Michigan is introduced.
    • Ted Grevstad-Nordbrock left the office on April 28, 2014 to take a position at Iowa State University.
    • Jessica Puff will be leaving for a position at the Hawaii SHPO.
    • Kelly Larson as the Mainstreet designed will be leaving to take a position as ??? in Lincoln, KS.
    • Denise Sachau will be retiring on June 6, 2014.
    • Conway plans on filling all four positions.  Two have been approved an two are pending.
    • All SHPO staff have been going through Placemaking Training as well as HR training.
    • Governor’s Awards were Wednesday and were well attended.
    • SHPO has formed a partnership with DNR with lease arrangement with Belle Isle.  We are also working with the
    • City of Detroit to revise the National Register Nomination for Belle Isle.
    • Diego Rivera Murals in the DIA were listed as an NHL.
    • The Badger is moving forward for consideration as a NHL.
    • McGregor Memorial Conference NHL nomination is moving forward as well and will be considered on 5/28/2014.
    • Michigan Modern will have a private opening at the GRAM on Friday, May 17, 2014 and beginning May 18, 2014 it is open to the public.  It has been reworked and expanded since it was at Cranbrook. Also hosting a symposium at Kendall College June 19-21, 2014.
    • MHPN conference next week in Jackson.
    • Main Street Conference is in Detroit May 18-22, 2014.
    • Lighthouse Conference is in Traverse City May 21-23, 2014.
  • Dean Anderson, State Archaeologist
    • Anderson attended the Society of American Archaeology Conference in Austin, TX. There were about 5,000 attendees. There is also a poster contest and the Michigan’s Archaeology poster received 2nd place.
    • Working with the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe on the interpretation of the Sanilac site.
    • Working on a pilot project of digitizing archaeological maps. A small sample has been done and we will continue and digitize all 1,200 maps.
    • MHPN Conference is having Archaeology sessions again this year.
