July 19, 2016

For the first time in the department’s 99-year history, there are now three trooper recruit schools taking place at the Michigan State Police (MSP) Training Academy in Lansing. On Sunday, 50 prospective troopers reported for the first day of the 131st Trooper Recruit School.

There are four trooper recruit schools and a motor carrier officer recruit school planned for this year:

  • 129th Trooper Recruit School began March 27, 2016; will graduate Aug. 26, 2016.
  • 130th Trooper Recruit School began June 5, 2016; will graduate Nov. 4, 2016.
  • 131st Trooper Recruit School began July 17, 2016; will graduate Dec. 22, 2016.
  • 21st Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School will start Aug. 28, 2016; will graduate Jan. 6, 2017.
  • 132nd Trooper Recruit School will start Aug. 28; will graduate Feb. 3, 2017.

"We’re proud to open the doors of the MSP Training Academy to the recruits of the 131st Trooper Recruit School,” stated Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP. "Thanks to the support of Governor Snyder and the Legislature, we continue to rebuild our staffing levels to serve Michiganders in communities statewide.”

In order to be selected to attend the 131st Trooper Recruit School, recruits had to pass a stringent selection process that included a physical fitness test, background investigation and hiring interview.

Over the next 23 weeks, between wake-up at 5 a.m. and lights-out at 10 p.m., the recruits will receive instruction in firearms, water safety, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing and precision driving.

Recruits who successfully complete recruit school will graduate on December 22, 2016.

The MSP is actively recruiting for future recruit schools. To learn more about a career with the MSP, interested candidates should visit www.michigan.gov/mspjobs.
