MSP Statement on Passage of Proposal 1
November 7, 2018
As a result of yesterday’s approval of Proposal 1, Michigan’s criminal justice community will need to implement new policies and procedures that account for the legal use and possession of marijuana by persons age 21 and older. The MSP will consult with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office to determine specific impact on existing department policies and procedures, and will then train our members to ensure the new law is applied appropriately.
The MSP reminds residents that this new law does not take effect until 10 days after the Michigan Board of Canvassers certifies the election results. Additionally, the new law does not permit marijuana use in public places, nor does it change Michigan’s impaired driving laws, which means that driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
